The heart is arguably the most important muscle/organ in the human body, this is mainly because of the life sustaining function it performs. The heart is responsible for keep your blood flowing which is necessary for delivering nutrients and oxygen to each and every part of your body. Nutrition takes up a big role in keeping your heart healthy and continuously pumping. In recent years, heart diseases have become the greatest killers mainly caused by bad or unhealthy eating habits. There are over 40 million people in the world currently suffering from a form of heart disease. Watching how and especially what you eat can be the difference between life and death.

Very low levels of Vitamin C intake are an important risk factor that can lead to heart disease. Vulnerability varies from person to person. The good news is that Vitamin C is rather easy to obtain. All you need is a sufficient amount of citrus fruits such as oranges, papaya or cantaloupes which are considered rich in Vitamin C. Sardines are rich in Omega-3 (O3) which helps the heart by rising good cholesterol, lowering triglyceride levels and helping against inflammation. Other good alternatives to sardines include tuna, salmon, trout and mackerel.

Scientific studies report that legumes offer protective effects over the heart, some have suggested that legumes reducing blood pressure and plaque in the blood vessels.

Healthy nuts such as almonds decrease the incidence or risk of several heard diseases. These effects are largely attributed to them containing healthy fats, protein and fiber.

Pomegranates have exceptionally interesting properties pertinent in the fight against the advancement of heart disease. They contain antioxidant, anti-hypertensive and anti-inflammatory effects. The fruit also prevents the formation of harmful plaque.

Berries are typically rich in fiber and other healthy nutrients. Blueberries have been studied broadly for their potential against heart disease. They contain antioxidants, help reducing plaque and can considerably reduce the risk for coronary heart disease.

Other foods that have been identified as great for the heart include; Beets, Turmeric, Chia Seeds, Apples and Broccoli.
