Firmly hold the apple standing vertically with one hand. Use the paring knife to mark the upper circumference in four equal segments. On the first segment line, cut an oval shape around the line about 1/8 inches deep and about 1cm in length (do this by holding your knife at an angle to the apple and cut incision on one side of the line and another on the other side noting to touch both cut tips together).
